Back in the day when Mad Men was “so hot right now” circa 2010ish my girlfriend at the time gave me this MAD AVE book after coming back from some award show thing at the AD Club and I was living in the McKibbin lofts, probably buzzed off a cheap wine weed combo thing. She had her shit together way before I did, I still don’t who are we kidding? Anywho…fast forward to last night, while I’m up in Connecticut visiting my folks, the slow cooker is getting that chili going and my dad is sifting through this MAD AVE book (This book which I found buried in a cardboard box in the barn outside that my dad uses as his art studio) he stumbles upon this Jim Beam ad. It’s pretty damn simple and pretty damn smart. I wonder what kind of
A.D.D. K-hole I can go into and really dig deep into this ad.
It’s kinda strange how an ad like this which was blown up on billboards and print, might simply just be relinquished to a single social post on Instagram. The agency would demand 10 of these different lines and layouts by EOD and bang them out for Twitter, IG, and FB for the week before Christmas.
Agency is Roy Grace
Art Director is Chris Graves
Diane Rothschild and Roy Grace are the CD’s
Copywriter is Craig Demeter
With the current holiday season approaching I feel like actually buying this stuff and I never drink it. It’s funny how a simple ad like this from 1989 gave me that sense of old growing up as a little kid and seeing family nostalgia. I definitely have a fair share of drinkers in the family (ahem Irish and Italians).
